La Caleche

Chamonix

French

La Caleche is a large Savoyarde restaurant right in the centre of town. This is the only place to go if you want to get a real local meal in an authentic setting: the serving staff are all wearing traditional costumes and there is enough Savoyarde objects around to decorate four restaurants of the same size!

The restaurant is spread over three levels and seats more than 300 people. But even though La Caleche is big, the restaurant still has an intimate feel to it with booth style seating, romantic smaller tables downstairs and little private corners everywhere. The copious amounts of artefacts give you a good idea of the olden Savoyarde days. Discover the farming and skiing history of the area while enjoying some of the meat and cheese dishes characteristic of this region.

The menu at La Caleche is almost as large as their dining rooms, and it is difficult to choose from so many delicious options. The Chamonixinfo gang are regular customers at La Caleche (especially when we are having friends or family over), so we have tried many dishes. We love the tartar of salmon and scallops starter and the farcement, which is a local speciality with bacon, potatoes and dried fruit. There are some delicious fish courses like pan-fried scallops, but we prefer the roasted lamb or the expensive beef filet grilled with foie gras. For a truly authentic dining experience, go for one of the hot stone meals. The stone will continue cooking your meat, so you can make sure your beef, turkey or duck is exactly the way you like it. There are also plenty of excellent fondues to choose from.

La Caleche is a traditional restaurant with lots to see, sometimes a bit too much like the moving bears that greet you when entering the restaurant. And every Tuesday a costumed traditional dance is being performed. The food here is great, but you have to be in the mood for Savoyarde dishes, as there isn’t much else on the menu. But if that is no problem, and you want a real French experience, La Caleche is the place for you.

Une cuisine de tradition entre les fromages et le viandes comme la fondue de roblochon et diots de savoie. A ne pas manquer; le palais glace au genepi.

Tous les mardi soir animation savoyarde avec chants et danses d'autrefois.
