Grand Hotel Montenvers
Le Grand Hotel Montenvers is impressive. It sits perched on the rocks overlooking the famous Mer de Glace, which attracts many thousands of people to Chamonix every year.
Open in both winter and summer, it's a fabulous place to sit down and eat, either on the terrace (50 covers) or in the restaurant (90 covers).
The Montenvers is all about rustic charm. Built in 1880 to lodge all those pioneering alpinists, you can still take a bed in a dorm or an individual room for the night, but the real highlight has to be eating here.
The Compagnie du Mont Blanc who runs the hotel also organises interesting evenings with a rides on the train included. Imagine reaching the hotel after dark, eating a good meal and dancing the night away until you return to Chamonix on the train in the early hours of the morning.
In fact, the venue has become really popular for wedding parties, with private departures of the train included. A truly magical setting and one that has to be visited.
