Les Grands Montets

Chamonix

Ski and Snowboard Areas Sightseeing

Located next to the village of Argentière, les Grands Montets is very popular amongst skilled skiers and snowboarders. Facing north, it gets very little sun early in the season and can be really icy, however it also means that good snow conditions are often well preserved.

It is a paradise for those searching for steeps, moguls and off-piste adventures. The top cable car takes you onto the Argentière glacier – this offers unpatrolled, unmarked skiing on a glacier, complete with crevasses and other dangers, so if it’s your first time up here, check it out with a guide. Due to its notoriety, les Grands Montets can be awfully crowded late in the season, and on a powder day manages to be completely tracked out by 9.30. It is the steepest area in the valley, so beware: a blue run here is steeper than a blue run in les Houches, or indeed anywhere else in the valley.

There is a good beginners area (les Chosolets) at the bottom, near the entrance to the car-park, but an advanced beginner/cautious intermediate skier who is ready to move on to something a bit more challenging will find more suitable slopes in the other ski areas than at les Grands Montets. There are no green runs here, and only two blues.

The ski bus from Chamonix takes you right to the foot of the cable car (with a stop on the way at les Chosolets, for beginners), or you can get the train to Argentière, and walk 10mins, through the village and through the car-park for the ‘Grand Roc’ apartments, to reach the lifts.

During the summer months, les Grands Montets offers everything from hiking, alpinism and mountaineering to paragliding and mountain biking.
