Experience a traditional Maya Tuj, also known as a temazcal or sauna, at a spiritual center in San Juan Chamelco, Alta Verapaz. The Tuj’s spherical shape represents the maternal womb and serves as a connection to Mother Earth.
This ancient practice has been used by Maya medical ancestors and midwives for medicinal, therapeutic, spiritual, healing, and relaxation purposes. Inside the Tuj, you will enjoy aromatherapy with healing herbs and practice breathing exercises enhanced by steam produced from volcanic stones, fire, and hot water.
