Description
Begin your visit at Castello Scaligero, a 14th-century fortress guarding Sirmione’s historic centre on Lake Garda. Surrounded by water and accessed by a drawbridge, the castle is one of Italy’s best-preserved lakeside fortifications, reflecting centuries of history and architecture.
Wander the courtyards and ramparts once controlled by the Della Scala family. Discover the open-gorged towers and the remarkable 14th-century fortified dock, the only one still standing today. Explore the revelin at the entrance, cross the main courtyard, and walk the allures that connect the three corner towers. Climb 146 steps to reach the 37-metre keep, originally the castellan’s residence, for panoramic views of Lake Garda and the Sirmione peninsula.
The castle’s restoration, started in 1919, restored its medieval features, including refilled ancient docks. Your ticket includes access to the keep, where you can experience the historic atmosphere and unique views. Note that the dock area is accessible only during guided tours, which are not included in the standard ticket. The visit ends within the castle grounds, allowing you to explore Sirmione’s centre or relax by the lake afterward.
