Description
Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey, founded in the 10th century by Benedictine monks, has remained a prominent medieval pilgrimage site since the worship of Saint Michel began in 708. The abbey notably resisted English attacks during the Hundred Years’ War, becoming a symbol of French national identity.
After monks left in 1790, the abbey was designated a historic monument in 1874. Ongoing restoration efforts have preserved its historical significance. The abbey sits atop the village of Mont-Saint-Michel, accessible via numerous steps, which may pose difficulties for visitors with reduced mobility or those using strollers.
