Description
Carcassonne, inhabited since the 6th century BC, developed into an important Roman town and was fortified in the 4th century. Its distinctive double-walled ramparts and castle expansions date from the 13th century under the king’s orders. The city was extensively restored in the 19th century by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, representing 1,000 years of military architecture and 2,500 years of history.
After devastation during the Cathar Crusade (1209-1229) and the exile of the Trencavel family, restoration efforts began in 1844 and were completed in 1911 under Paul Boeswillwald. Carcassonne was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997.
The tour now includes a self-guided option to view the medieval western ramparts and take in panoramic views of the city.
