Description

Summer in Kyoto brings a tradition that locals eagerly await each year: the Kamishichiken Beer Garden. Hosted by the geiko and maiko of Kyoto's oldest geisha district, this seasonal event offers a rare opportunity to experience a side of hanamachi culture that feels lively, relaxed, and welcoming. Unlike a formal performance or private banquet, the Kamishichiken Beer Garden offers a more relaxed setting where the district's geiko and maiko visit each table throughout the evening. Although dressed in summer attire rather than their formal kimono and white makeup, they chat with guests, pose for photos, and often present their traditional business cards (senjafuda). Tour Description: We'll meet in Kamishichiken for a tour of the 'hanamachi' - geisha district - before entering the beer garden together. Your guide will explain the history of Kyoto's geisha districts, how geiko and maiko train, the differences that mark a professional geiko from a trainee, and the customs that shape this centuries-old profession. Rather than simply observing, you'll have the opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations with geiko and maiko through your guide, who interprets your questions in Japanese and explains the customs, etiquette, and traditions of Kyoto's oldest geisha district. Your ticket includes admission, one drink, and a selection of snacks. This experience is available only during the summer season and is limited to adults aged 20 and over.
