Description
Discover Kamakura’s essential highlights and quieter spiritual sites on a 6-hour small-group walking tour with a local guide. Designed for first-time visitors, this experience combines Samurai history, Shinto and Buddhist traditions, hidden shrines, scenic streets, and a ride on the Enoden train. Meet your guide at Kamakura Station and walk to Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, one of the city’s most important landmarks. Learn about its connection with the Kamakura shogunate, the basic traditions of Shinto, and the city’s development as a political and cultural center. Continue on foot to Zeniarai Benzaiten Shrine, hidden in a green valley. Enter through a rock tunnel and take part in the local custom of washing coins or banknotes in the shrine’s spring water. According to tradition, money washed here may bring good fortune when later spent wisely. Walk to nearby Sasuke Inari Shrine, a peaceful hillside shrine known for its rows of red torii gates, fox statues, and forested atmosphere. Hear the legend connecting the shrine with Minamoto no Yoritomo, the founder of the Kamakura shogunate, and discover a quieter side of Kamakura that many visitors miss. Continue walking toward the Hase area and take a short lunch break along the way or near Hase. Your guide can help you find a suitable restaurant, but food and drinks are not included. Visit Kotoku-in Temple, home of the Great Buddha of Kamakura. Learn about the history and symbolism of the large bronze statue and why it became one of Japan’s most recognized Buddhist landmarks. Continue to Hasedera Temple, known for its Buddhist statues, gardens, seasonal flowers, traditional buildings, and views toward the sea. Explore the temple grounds while your guide explains its main features and the role of Buddhism in Japanese culture. After visiting Hasedera, walk to Hase Station and ride the Enoden train back to Kamakura Station. The short train journey provides a classic local experience and a comfortable conclusion to the tour. The route from Kamakura Station to Hasedera is completed entirely on foot. The tour includes several hours of walking, hills, stairs, and uneven paths. Participants should be comfortable walking for an extended period and keeping pace with the group. The itinerary and duration of each stop may change depending on weather, crowds, temple opening hours, and the group’s walking speed.
