Connemara Day Tour from Galway with Local Guide

This full-day guided tour departs from Galway and suits travelers interested in exploring Connemara's landscapes and cultural sites.

Description

Your tour begins at 09:30 outside the Kinlay Hostel on Merchants Road, Galway. A fully trained local driver and guide will lead the journey from Galway city through the historic fishing village of Claddagh and Salthill, known for the Blackrock diving tower and Promenade.

Travel along the Wild Atlantic Way as you follow the shoreline of Galway Bay. The Connemara landscape unfolds with distant mountains, lakes, blanket bogs, and forests.

The first stop is a photo opportunity at Screeb waterfall to capture typical Connemara scenery. Next, pause at Derryclare Lough, a freshwater lake at the entrance to the Inagh Valley.

The tour continues to Clifden, considered Connemara's unofficial capital. Here you can explore local crafts, bars, and restaurants along narrow streets lined with brightly painted shopfronts.

Follow the Sky Road route, a Wild Atlantic Way Discovery Point, for panoramic views over the Atlantic Islands and additional photo stops.

You will then choose one of two main 3-hour stops:

  • Connemara National Park: Covering nearly 3,000 hectares, the park offers walking trails at the visitor centre including a hike to Diamond Hill (400m). The park features mountains, bogs, grasslands, and woodlands to explore at your own pace.
  • Kylemore Abbey and Victorian Walled Gardens: Entry tickets can be purchased from your guide (cash only) at a discounted rate. Kylemore Abbey is a 19th-century castle-turned-Benedictine monastery surrounded by a 1,000-acre estate, known for its historical and serene setting.

After the main stop, travel through the Inagh Valley flanked by the Twelve Bens and Maumturk mountains. Experience views of peatlands, mountains, lakes, and countryside where sheep graze freely.

Visit the village of Recess, known for the Connemara Giant statue, on your way back. Return to Galway passing the Quiet Man bridge on your right.
