Description

During the Second World War, residents of Maastricht used the Zonneberg Caves as an underground shelter about 30 meters below the surface. This vast labyrinth once included over 20,000 corridors.

An experienced guide leads you through the cave system, showing names and drawings left by workers from previous centuries. The caves housed an evacuation area with electric lighting, a public address system, a bakery, toilets, chapels, a small hospital, water pumps, and other facilities, although these were never fully used. Many of these features are still visible today.

The caves maintain a constant temperature of about 11 degrees Celsius year-round. Dress accordingly and wear sturdy shoes for comfort and safety.
