- Panoramic views over Paris
- View the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the eternal flame
Description
The Arc de Triomphe is a 50-meter tall Neoclassical arch inspired by ancient Roman triumphal arches. Commissioned by Napoleon after his victory at Austerlitz, it was completed after his death. The rooftop platform offers extensive views across Paris, allowing you to see the dozen avenues radiating from the monument.
At the base of the arch lies the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, honoring 1.3 million French soldiers who died in World War I. The eternal flame is rekindled every evening at 6:30 PM. An exhibition near the tomb explains the symbolic importance of the monument.
Climbing the 284 stairs to the terrace is well worth the effort. The elevator is available only for disabled visitors and access requires a short additional staircase. Unlike the Eiffel Tower, this experience is less crowded and often overlooked by tourists.
