Paragliding - Aiguille du Midi (Chamonix) Launch Site
Access is by the Aiguille du Midi cable car, which is located in the centre of Chamonix. Take the cable car to the top, then traverse the arête – this is a very exposed narrow glacial ridge. Crampons, a rope and mountaineering experience (or a qualified mountain guide) are necessary. This launch site is closed in July and August. It is also forbidden to overfly during this period.
SKILL LEVEL
This is a high mountain launch on a glacier. As such it is suitable only for highly skilled pilots with excellent take off technique and mountaineering experience. Skilled pilots who do not have mountaineering experience can hire a qualified mountain guide in order to enjoy this magnificent and challenging site.
ORIENTATION AND CONDITIONS
With options for a north or south launch, this site is suitable all day. North or south winds in anticyclonic periods present the best conditions.
Altitude: 3700m. Vertical drop: 2700m.

CAUTIONS
As a high mountain itinerary, this launch presents particular challenges with respect to aerology and altitude. Be aware that winds can increase very quickly, and that you will have reduced lift than at lower altitudes. Good physical condition is essential. This launch is on a glacier and is not for the vertiginous – it is very exposed and both launches are over crevasses. Access is a little easier during the winter when ropes are installed on the arête for skiers. Check the time of the last cable car down and ensure that you have enough time to catch it if you are unable to take off.
