Description

Explore Puebla, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, on a walking tour that takes you through its colonial history, Baroque architecture, and hidden gems. Discover the city’s mysteries and anecdotes, including places even locals don’t know. Near the zócalo -the central plaza- visit the majestic Cathedral of Puebla, Mexico’s oldest cathedral, built from 1585 to 1649. Marvel at its two 74-meter-high towers, 58 angel statues, and three 17th-century organs. Admire the octagonal altar surrounded by 14 chapels. Be amazed by the Palafox Library, the first public library in America, founded in 1646. See its collection of 5,348 manuscripts and 800 printed books from the 15th century, covering history, theology, poetry, and more. It’s the only library with incunabula books (handwritten books prior to the printing press). Discover the Chapel of the Rosary, once known as the “Eighth Wonder of the New World,” built in 1650. Admire its 24-carat gold sheets and extraordinary decorations with naturalistic evocations. These golden sheets, when in contact with the sun, give a celestial glow to the altarpiece making it majestic. Walk down Santa Clara Street, aka the Street of Sweets. Located near the 17th-century convent of the Poor Clare nuns of Puebla, this street offers colors and typical sweets of the city, all created by nuns from different convents in the city. They are unique for being reinterpretations of Spanish recipes with Mexican ingredients. The stories and legends about them are a classic Puebla tradition. Climb up to the rooftops of Puebla via a secret access to admire the city from above. Stroll down El Parian, the oldest market of Puebla (1545) located in a beautiful quarter where commercial deals were carried out between Mexico, Europe and Asia from the 16th century to the 18th century. The colorful stands nowadays offer traditional crafts and Talavera poblana, the emblematic ceramics of Puebla (UNESCO intangible cultural heritage). Explore El Barrio del Artista (the artist’s quarter), an emblematic and peaceful place considered Puebla’s “little Montmartre,” where you can admire painters in their creative process. Taste an artisanal ice cream in the most famous ice cream parlor of Puebla and enjoy one of Poblano’s signature flavors: Aztec corn, cheese, lemon pie, rose petals, Rompope, and more.
